Agnipath Scheme: Overview

Agniveer, a new scheme introduced by the government, aims to make the armed forces more youthful and technologically adept. It will also provide a valuable opportunity for young individuals to gain military skills and experience, while at the same time building an outstanding resume and profile.

According to Lieutenant General Anil Puri, who works as the Additional Secretary of the Department of Military Affairs, ‘The average age in the armed forces is 32, but it’s expected to decrease to 26 within the next six or seven years. Hence, we need to tap into the youth and turn them into future-ready soldiers.’ This is why the scheme was designed – to provide a stable Agniveer salary after 4 years and to encourage young people to serve their country.

During their four years as Agniveers, the candidates will be trained by the Army, Navy and Air Force to perform a range of roles in the armed forces. They will be paid a customized monthly package with risk and hardship allowances, according to the policies of the three services. Unlike regular soldiers, Agniveers won’t contribute to any Provident Fund and don’t get any gratuity or pension benefits. By adopting this initiative, the government aims to bring down the average age profile of the armed forces. This will help transform the armed forces into a young, tech-savvy and modern fighting force. Additionally, the average age of retired soldiers will decline, making it easier for people to get jobs in the armed forces after retirement. This will increase the overall efficiency of the armed forces and also allow for more recruitment of women, who are currently in short supply.

Agniveer Post Retirement Benefits

After four years of service, Agniveers will be eligible for a Seva Nidhi Package. This package is a combination of medical and CSD facilities, insurance coverage, allowances, and death and disability compensation. The package is also exempt from income tax.
